The Board of the International Council for Coaching Excellence (ICCE) and its European body, Sport Coaching Europe, held a joint meeting in Porto, Portugal, on 30 and 31 May 2024. The meeting aimed to present their activities, review results to date, explore ways to improve their operation and effectiveness, and agree on objectives and the steps needed to achieve them by 2030.

Greece was represented by Mr Thanasis Villiotis, President of the Hellenic Federation of Sports Coaches and Trainers (POPA), in his capacity as a member of Sport Coaching Europe responsible for developing coaches’ associations in Europe. Mr Villiotis presented his activities during his first year in this position.

During that period, he approached coaches from all the Balkan countries, Malta, Cyprus, Italy and Türkiye with the aim of establishing an association representing coaches of all sports in each country. As a result, the process of establishing unified coaches’ associations has begun in Malta and Cyprus, while the relevant procedures in Romania are expected to begin soon.

Malta’s representative at the Porto meeting confirmed that the process had started there. A similar announcement concerning Cyprus was made during the recent visit by ICCE President Mr John Bales, Mr Thanasis Villiotis and POPA General Secretary Mr Dimitris Stefanidis. Following the presentation, representatives of Belgium and the Baltic countries requested Mr Villiotis’s support in establishing coaches’ associations in their countries.
