On Tuesday, 26 May, MP Giorgos Mavrotas met with the Board of the Hellenic Federation of Sports Coaches and Trainers (POPA).
The highly constructive meeting addressed many problems affecting coaches across all sports, particularly those that have historically received less attention from the state, such as badminton, archery, tennis, cycling and canoe-kayak. Employment status, lack of insurance, the validity of coaching licences and the absence of unified coaching regulations were discussed in detail.
POPA representatives raised the important need for certification of coaches and coaching schools, proposing the creation of a properly structured coaching school in line with European standards. They also discussed the certification of instructors in sports offered within the tourism sector, where the lack of a clear framework often has harmful consequences, including for the country’s image.
Having himself been an athlete for many years, and recognising the substantial contribution made by coaches in every sport, Mr Mavrotas noted: “We must not forget the coach’s very important role. Just as we cannot provide proper education in schools without teachers, we cannot have proper, well-rounded sport without coaches.” All participants agreed that coaches must have a voice and take part in decision-making within federations and sports organisations generally.
